This command allows one or more external image files to be imported as one or more new layers.
This has the same functionality as checking and unchecking the layer visibility checkbox. Swaps the layer visibility state between visible and hidden (and back again). Takes the active layer and combines or merges it into the layer immediately below it in the Layers Window list. This makes an exact copy of the active layer, including its contents, attributes and properties. The new layer will be named uniquely following the pattern described above (see Add New Layer).
This deletes the active layer from the image. As all images must have at least one layer, the last remaining layer cannot be deleted.
It is possible (and highly recommended) to change the default name to accurately reflect the contents of the layer (see Layer Properties below). New layers are filled with transparent black pixels (i.e. X denotes the layer number - hence it is always a unique identifier. This adds a new, completely transparent layer to the image immediately above the active layer. The new layer will be given a generic name "Layer X" by default. Some are also present as icons located at the bottom of the Layers Window. The commands in this menu only affect the active layer, as chosen in the Layers Window. You can, also, more easily move elements around on a layer more easily that having all the elements on a drawing or painting on one layer. If you don't alike what you did on a layer, you can erase an entire layer and start drawing or painting on that layer, again, or delete the layer entirely. If you want to alter elements on a layer only that layer gets affected. You can build up a drawing or painting by putting different elements on different layers. Think of layers as multiple sheet of clear paper or thin sheets of clear plastic that you can draw or paint on. Why are you afraid of applications that use layers? Layers are one of the easier concepts of both drawing and painting apps to understand and use.
